While on vacation in Michigan, we took a trek up to visit a Lighthouse that is near where we stay, but that we just never had found the time to visit. If you are driving down US 33 in rural Indiana, chances are it might be your lucky day if it is summer, and you are near Albion. I'm not supposed to have dairy, but you'd better believe that soft serve cone was all for me- and it was yummy!

Personal Projects (Warsaw, IN Film Photographer)

For some time now I've been wanting to do a personal project on a slightly grander scheme than what I have been doing. I tried a couple of organizations, but none were interested at this time. Got quite frustrated. Then it hit me- what, to us, is more personal than small businesses? We own a small business, and it is our life! Ever since we made the move to professional photographer we've tried to support as much local business as possible!

So, I'm actually putting out a "casting call" of sorts, for local businesses. Here's the basics, and feel free to contact me if you are a small local business or if you know of a small local business you think might benefit! I'd like to shoot behind-the-scenes with your business for a half or whole day. I'd be capturing on film. You'd sign a release, and I'd blog about your business, plus give you a small selection of web-sized images for business use, with appropriate credit. This is Samuel, and me, plus part of our little fuzzy family. We've been married for almost 5 years, and while we were both photographers separately before we got together (I gave Sam his first camera!), we've been professional photographers together for over 3 years now.  We absolutely LOVE what we do! Together we specialize in capturing love- between couples, and between families. We are currently going through a bit of a transformation, as we add film into our professional work, and as we work to refine our vision & create a more custom approach for our unique clients! These two... they make me laugh! They are adorable together, and separate, and when we met for engagement photos, they told me they were awkward in front of the camera! So either I worked some magic here, or we were able to just capture what they couldn't see yet! But it's pretty amazing- what we got!

Things I See- Why film? (Warsaw, IN Film Photographer)

To say I'm passionate about film is an understatement right now... I'm practically living and breathing it, and loving every minute of it!! About every other person I talk to asks me the "Why film?" question, and I'm pretty certain I give a different rambling answer each time- I love the look. It's required me to learn to be a better photographer. I just feel different when shooting film. I love the minimal process. I've always shot film, I'm just finally seeing why I loved it all these years.

I finally realized the real reason I am doing it, even though it is expensive, frustrating, exhilarating, etc, etc, ETC, is because I finally truly feel like an artist. I'm doing something that is almost elemental, and it has caused me to pause, and to truly consider everything. And I couldn't be more in love!!

 
This is my "newest" film camera. I actually bought it via FaceBook (not for the faint of heart) and it was a real steal!! From the moment I shot my first frame I KNEW this was MY camera!! It's manual, which means I have to do everything myself, and I love the connection I have to making it all work. I had gone through some frustrating moments earlier this year with various issues in different cameras- and so I shot 2 rolls of personal work, and 1 roll of professional work, and mailed them off to the FIND Lab with my heart in my throat!

I cried when I got these scans back... and not because they were that bad, but because they were that good! I could hardly believe this was my film work! (I didn't even know for sure if the camera worked! And I shot it without a light meter even!)

Things I See... Beach Babies! (Warsaw, IN Photographer)

A few weeks back I spent the day shooting film. The lovely Ashley Stills (of Tommy Vance Productions) met me at Winona Lake Park with her adorable daughter, Zoey. She had a friend meet her there, also bringing along an adorable daughter, also named Zoey! The two girls made a bee-line for the beach, and here are the results!

Sam & I were on a drive home from a wedding, when I saw this field of dandelions & requested he pull over. I found the truck in a neighboring parking lot. I kinda fell in love with yellow. ~N

Things I See- Miss Mallory (Warsaw IN Photographer)

So Mallory is one of my volunteers who let me use them as a model. I really was just using these sessions to familiarize myself with some new equipment and film, but the results really rocked my socks off! Hope Mallory loves these as much as I do! ~Naomi

Honesty & Hard Work. (Warsaw, IN Photographer)

I'm going to state something that might make me a bit unpopular, but I don't care. Recently there was a new website that hit the photography world, and it has received a lot of attention. I read it, laughed, and moved on with my life.

What made this particular website so popular was that it spouted info that was ludicrous to most photographers, because we know what it truly means to become a decent one, and because it catered to the wants of those who don't. 

There is no ten step program to becoming an amazing photographer- whether you shoot weddings or not. There are about ten billion different steps- and many of them are this: HARD. WORK.

I wanted to become a better photographer, so I started hitting the streets. I took photos of anything and everything. I moved back to film. I have this desire to not stop at where I am, but to move on and to hopefully knock your socks off! And reading blogs & websites that tell me to believe in myself aren't helping me get that way. Learning, studying, hard work, are helping me become who I want to be.

If someone tells you to believe in yourself, that's great! But believe that it also will take a ton of work to find out whether or not you are good at something. And when you realize you are, you can finally take a breath and recognize you did it! (But then you gotta go right back out and work hard again so you get even better!)

Things I See... Childhood friends (Warsaw, IN Photographer)

Since I've been working more in film, and building confidence, I requested some volunteers to practice on. I was thrilled that Jamie volunteered, as she's been in front of my camera before & I know she is a great model, but also because it is great to catch up with friends.

Jamie and I have known each other for... well, probably at least 20 years. Childhood friend, then Facebook put us back in touch after years of just bumping into each other every couple years. She is a wonderful person- Wife, Mother of 3, and she was so excited to have the day off child-free, that I almost felt bad taking up her time!

Hope she loves these as much as I do.
